New results: synthesis of carbon wires in water

We report the synthesis of carbon wires (polyynes) by submerged arc discharge in pure water. Polyynes with length from 6 to 16 carbon atoms have been detected by liquid chromatography through their UV-vis absorption spectra. By liquid chromatography we were able to separate and collect size-selected polyynes (6,8,10 carbon atoms) and to investigate their vibrational properties by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). This paper has been accepted for publication on Chemical Physics Letters (Elsevier).
