New results: synthesis of polyynes with controlled length and termination

Polyynes have been synthesized by laser ablation in liquids in different solvents, carbon atomic wires up to 22 carbon atoms in length are observed. The terminations are driven by the preesence of the solvent. The work has been published on Phys Chem Chem Phys. S. Peggiani, P. Marabotti, R.A. Lotti, A. Facibeni, P. Serafini, A. Milani, V. Russo, A. Li Bassi and C.S. Casari, Solvent-dependent termination, size and stability in polyynes synthesized via laser ablation in liquids, Phys.Che...

New Results: a transistor made of carbon atomic wires

Field effect transistor (FET) made of cumulene like carbon atomic wires has been fabricated for the first time. Our proof-of-concept FET device works at room temperature, is easily fabricated by solution drop casting and paves the way for exploiting sp-carbon atomic wires as active electronic materials. The work has been published on The Journal of Chemical Physics Letters (ACS) and is the result of a collaboration between the the ERC HEROIC team of Mario Caironi at the Center for Nano Science...

New results: modeling properties of graphdiyne nanoribbons

We report calculations of the electronic and vibrational properties of graphdiyne nanoribbons. Gamma-Graphdiyne is a 2D crystal made by sp2 carbon rings connected through sp linear links. By cutting graphdiyne along specific direction it is possible to obtain nanoribbons. Raman and IR spectra calculated for nanoribons of different width show interesting confinement effects. This paper has been accepted for publication on Physical Review Materials (American Physical Society - APS). Title: Raman ...

New results: synthesis of carbon wires in water

We report the synthesis of carbon wires (polyynes) by submerged arc discharge in pure water. Polyynes with length from 6 to 16 carbon atoms have been detected by liquid chromatography through their UV-vis absorption spectra. By liquid chromatography we were able to separate and collect size-selected polyynes (6,8,10 carbon atoms) and to investigate their vibrational properties by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). This paper has been accepted for publication on Chemical Physics Le...
